So this one will definitely be informal. On a Friday night I usually am the one to have something to do that is not academic related. This is necessary due to Chemistry and Lab, but mostly Lab. However, this one Friday left me with absolutely nothing to do. I could have studied…um…no. For some reason it is hard to study when there is always something amiss outside my door especially on a Friday night. So as I scour my dormitory I stumble upon my friends in their room right before they are about to go next door to cook a feast. Wonderful, I think to myself. Something to do. I will observe the cooking since I am not a bit hungry and am desperate to spend time. Copious amounts of coppa, salmon, cream cheese, chocolate strawberries, and sparkling cider later (a meal for kings in my belief), we are back in the dormitory and chatting it up in the wee hours of the morning. These are the times that are poignant. The moments where you have the deepest conversations and it doesn’t matter. For example, some of the topics I just have to list.
- Old shows we used to watch and how Disney has gone down the toilet along with Nickelodeon. Shows like Rocko’s Modern life, Sailor Moon, Even Stevens, Lizzie McGuire, Boy Meets World, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Are you Afraid of the Dark?, Goosebumps, All That, Kenan and Kel, CatDog, Smart Guy, Sister Sister, Wild and Crazy Kids, Doug, Rugrats, Hey Arnold and many others I do not remember at the moment.
- Natural Disasters we have experienced. Mine were Hurricane Rita, Hurricane Ike, and Tropical Storm Allison. Others were the two F5s that hit central Texas around Austin.
- High School. Now this is the big one that had many branches. Some of which were drill team, overbearing Asians, cliques based on race or social class, not fitting in, social events, graduation, the sluts, the jocks, and the trophy black kids-yes this one definitely came up.
- Embracing your race and heritage. This mainly came up due to our talking of the wars where the soldiers were left in Japan and the mentioning of stereotypical Japanese commercials. The women during the wars (Japanese women) would get a doctor to slit their eyes to make them more Western and supposedly more “beautiful”. We laughed at how some of the Japanese believed Western women were beautiful while the Western women believed the Japanese women were beautiful. Nobody was satisfied with what they had. This brought about the subject of my natural hair of course. It was more of an exclamation like “I love your hair so much mostly because it is so cool, beautiful and not from someone else…like it’s YOURS!” This is not coming from me….
- Columbine, Virginia Tech, and psychopaths…enough said.
- How tired we are considering it is two am.
Now this is what I love about college. Those random moments of bonding that happen all the time but never get old. Well that is all that mattered to me tonight (this morning). I will be off to lab later today and hopefully go see the esteemed GirlTalk who is a popular DJ.
Cheers!
