Don’t judge a book by its cover. A surprise during lab inspired this theme along with another incident. Asians, middle easterners, Indians, etc. do listen to rap music. Not the hip hop that everyone listens to. I mean the hip hop that only the black kids know. Now this shouldn’t be a surprise to me, but when I am pipetting DNA into a tube while listening to some thugged out music over the PA system, I do feel…surprised. It is actually laughable. This genre is more influential than I previously believed.
Now this book cover statement is a given, yet we are all guilty of this. I am guilty of judging other people by what they appear, and I am also judged incorrectly by others as well. What also spawned all this are the comments I have received most of being of the nature of “You know what? You’re actually a pretty cool person.” Now I am undoubtedly flattered by this, but I am also surprised that something about my outward appearance, demeanor, what have you, gave them the impression that I was something other than “cool”. This is something though superficial is essential for interpersonal skills…or is it intrapersonal? Well for both, it is important. Because we come into contact with many people on a daily basis and since networking is essential for a successful career, outward appearance should be kept up and constantly self evaluated. I am constantly surprising my peers day by day and am enjoying it. After all, little mystery never hurt anyone. So that’s what I am going to change. I am going to be more conscious of the non-verbal message I am sending. I advise everyone to do the same
Peace.
