“I would be fat if I were Brazilian”
This is what I experienced last Saturday when my parents and I went to the delicious Brazilian steakhouse, Nelore, to celebrate my birthday (which was May 2nd. We celebrated late). It is a more unique and original version of Fogo de Chao. Nelore is in Houston on Montrose right next to the museum district (the yuppie area). Motown was playing in Hermann Park nearby and the area was just buzzing! The atmosphere was fantastic. Prom groups, families, couples, and gay couples (It IS Montrose after all) flooded the restaurant at dinner time. Nelore suited the crowd well since it is pretty much an old historic house transformed into a restaurant. It was much quieter and more homey, than the overbearing and obvious winner of Brazilian steakhouses everywhere, Fogo de Chao. My parents loved it and so did I!
How it worked was just like Fogo de Chao. You have a card that you flip over when you want the endless supply of meat (lamb, pork, beef, etc) of different varieties and flavors, but first you go to the salad bar. The salad bar has your veggies, fish and of course the classic Latin/Caribbean items like black beans and rice (which was like my Grandpa’s but Grandpa’s wins of course!) and fried plantains! Those are my absolute favorites! They also had the best mashed potatoes ever! I could taste the cream and butter that went into those puppies. Then, we indulged in MEAT. I used to be a fan of lamb, but after that night, I don’t think I am. It tastes…different. Pork is still one of my top choices, however.
After stuffing our faces, we sweetened our palate with a scrumptious chocolate mousse cake. Boy, was it rich! Mom also had ginger tea, dad had espresso, and I a cappuccino. Overall, the experience was amazing and fun! We left a few pounds heavier
