Friends.
Awkward beginning, I know, but then again I didn’t know how to start. Since being a college student and such, friends are becoming more and more a part of life…well, my life at least. This does make sense. After all, you are away from home now. You have to make a new “family”. However, me being me did not think of it that way. I have never really had a close-knit group of friends before. Yes, I have had friends but not like friends. So I got my taste of I guess what friends are, but it was and was not what I expected. Little did I know that friendships are actually relationships. DUH. I mean honestly I have never really had to work in friendships in high school (or school for that matter) so this is new to me! Let’s just say that I have learned some life lessons and such. I did find and find out some good golden rules though:
1. Don’t worry about knowing people, just make yourself worth knowing. aka be awesome!
2. Be friendly with the folks you know. If it weren’t for them you would be a total stranger.
Don’t be a jerk. Say “hello” or “good morning”
3. Friends are those who speak to you after others don’t.
You got to accept them if you love them. They accept you for who you are blah blah blah.
4. The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail and not his tongue.
Stop talking ish.
5. The way to have friends is to be willing to lose some arguments.
You don’t always have to dominate.
6. Deal with other’s faults as gently as if they were your own.
Don’t judge so harshly. You never know what you or anyone else is capable of.
7. A friend is a person who can step on your toes without messing your shine.
They look out for you as you do so for them as well.
8. You will never have a friend if you must have one without faults.
Nobody’s perfect. Thank you Hannah Montana for that song by the way.
9. You can make more friends by being interested in them than trying to have them be interested in you.
Don’t be so narcissistic.
10. A real friend is a person who, when you’ve made a fool of yourself, lets you forget it.
“you did what after how many drinks? Psh, no worries. It never happened.”
11. A friend is a person who listens attentively while you say nothing.
I have a sixth sense and it ain’t seeing dead people…
12. A friend is someone who thinks you’re a good egg even though you’re slightly cracked.
Aw shucks! You see the good in me!? yay!
13. …and most important, A FRIEND IS A TREASURE.
It takes time, maturity, and experience to really put these to work, but when you do, that friendship will last and be of the most genuine kind you have ever known. A true friendship isn’t pretty. If it is all rainbows and butterflies, something is wrong. Like they say for married couples, if you don’t at some time want to kill your spouse; you don’t love them. A little extreme, I know, but it holds some truth. On that note, stay friendly. Stay friendly.
