Ah, love. How wonderful it is. It knows no bounds. It knows no shape, color, or time and some just can’t get over it’s purity when uninfluenced.
Two Republican Leaders’ children tied the knot within the last two months. Senator McCain’s son, John McCain IV (below) and Speaker Boehner’s daughter, Lindsay (second photo down). I think this is fantastic and utterly comical! I honestly didn’t even hear that Boehner’s daughter was married. I found out about Senator McCain’s son after going through multiple sites. Needless to say, both were kept relatively quiet. Why? Honestly, no one knows, but them. However, I will throw a blatant theory out there: They are both interracial marriages within conservative families.
Now, I am not saying all conservatives are racists because that is not true and both leaders are fantastic that they are supporting their children in their choices. However, we usually hear about politician’s family happenings considering these are both two powerful men in this country and one ran for presidential election, but there was relatively nothing. Why!? This is awesome and congratulatory! John McCain IV married Renee Swift after meeting in Guam where they both served. To me, that is romantic and wonderful and should be told. Lindsay Boehner married Dominic Lakhan, a…pothead? I honestly don’t know about this one since it was kept on the down low. According to NY Daily News, he, Dominic, has had a marijuana possession charge. He also happens to be Jamaican-born and rocking some cool dreads. Like, how did this match happen!? Meh, doesn’t matter. They met. They fell in love. They got married like normal people.
In this time, we see a growing amount of interracial relationships, but when it comes to black woman, we see/hear few unlike with black men of whom we see dating inside and outside their race. This is of course okay and I don’t care, but when it is a black woman, I feel that it becomes more taboo like they don’t expect black women to date outside their race let alone marry. (Think about the TV show Scandal and how I was so controversial racially) Why? Are black women only attractive to black men? Are white men dating marrying beneath them? Are black women attractive period? Ay! Frankly in this day and age WHY DO WE STILL CARE. Prejudice is learned. It is horrible to say, but I find it true. Parents tell their children what to do and what to think, naturally. It is only when you’re able to think independently that change can happen by way of your actions. Disclaimer: I am not calling for anarchy against parents, ya hear? I just wonder sometimes if all this hesitation to change would stop if we just halted the negative influences of the past (aka older generations). We definitely can learn from them, but we can hold ourselves back just the same. After all, doing things the same way will not beget progress. We are still clinging, clutching onto these ideals, images, and perceptions to what a relationship should look like and it is unfortunate. We are so afraid of what is different and this fear projects itself to personal relationships whether they are interracial or same-sex, etc.
There was a recent uproar over THE CUTEST CHEERIO’S COMMERCIAL:
Like, why!? This is so adorable. Their race isn’t even a thing! UGH. There is nothing wrong about this commercial. If you don’t like interracial dating. Don’t do it. Black and white and every other race really need to get over it. Really.
