Act like a woman, think like a man *Movie Review*

April 22, 2012 by Ashley Willies

Think-Like-a-Man-posterHello there. I have just gotten home from the “Think like a Man” movie and am a little tired so if there are any mistakes I apologize!. First things first: the movie was absolutely hilarious! The audience was rolling with laughter from beginning to finish. I enjoyed myself. Now, on it’s content. The movie had a very sectioned plot. Well, what do I mean by sectioned? I mean that you had your 4 or so scenarios that played out to the end. This is similar to what is done in soap operas. It worked well in my opinion. Every character had its label: the player, the 90 day rule girl, the strong, overworking woman, the woman with a child, the dreamer, the non-committer, etc. They all had their parts and they all overcame their labels (which was the point of the movie). To me, it was better put together than expected. Yes, there was craziness. Yes, there was stereotypical comedy, but what I did not see much of was “ratchetness”. “Ratchetness” is used to describe some backwards, ridiculous, stereotypical mess. It is another word for “ghetto-fabulous” sometimes. I was happy to see that this wasn’t prominent in the movie and for that I am happy.

Of course some of the women had to compromise, which of course is necessary but creates this silent ultimatum that if you can’t find someone of your caliber you must go “beneath” you. Caliber being relative, the movie seemed to have equated caliber with money. This is of course fine, but for those who tend to take everything they watch, see, read, or listen to as a lesson, tip, or advice, this can be serious influence. This also isn’t bad, but in my opinion may cause women to choose men that they have no business choosing.

There was one interracial couple as well. Personally, I didn’t know the man was white until they said so. I mean, I have relatives who look like him that are black. That I was surprised at especially since it was a black woman with a white man. This isn’t a common occurrence. A black man and a woman of another race is very common. It seems like most athletes, celebrities, and artists seem to do this. This doesn’t bother me at all as long as both parties are participating, as in the women are interracially dating as much as the men. This isn’t the case, but that also isn’t the point of the this post now is it? haha caught myself. I just thought the couple was interesting. They were weird too

Jerry Ferrara, the white boy? (He is one of two)

Lastly, I just liked the movie. It was a feel good movie that replayed the scenarios that we want to watch over and over again. It made you feel better afterwards. It was funny, cute, and will be added to my list of feel good movies.
